Community
Canopy in the community
As a aerial arts center, Canopy Studio's most important goal is to enrich the culture of our community and the lives of individuals through flying dance trapeze, movement education and performance arts. Canopy is a resource for local artists and all individuals, regardless of background, age, or physical ability, providing instruction in movement arts and a much-needed venue for viewing and participating in dance experiences. Most importantly, we seek to reach out to diverse populations within our community. We have several scholarships available upon request and often donate our weekend hours to hosting workshops, classes, or performances in an outreach capacity.
Recent outreach and community involvement
A general highlight of our recent outreach and community involvement includes:
- $1,270 in summer camp scholarships for families requesting assistance
- Partial and full scholarships to our ongoing students totaling over $7,000 for 2009-2010. Thanks to a $5,000 grant (with $2,500 earmarked for scholarships), we were able to exceed our scholarship goals this year
- Free performances in support of non-profit organizations and community events at Hotel Indigo, the State Botanical Garden, Ashford Manor, the Lyndon House, the Healing Arts Center, Athens Montessori, and 999 Peachtree Street
- Trapeze workshops for local groups including Ron Clarke Academy and collaboration with Go Arts Athens to raise awareness for after-school programs at J.J. Harris Elementary School
- Movement classes for Burney Harris Lyons Middle School summer enrichment program
- “Career Day” field trips for the 5th grade class at Chase Street School
- Biannual Coile Middle School scholarship tickets for the Canopy Repertory shows
- Free community-open house day with Beginner and Intermediate student performances
- Ongoing collaboration with Georgia Guitar Quartet and other local musicians
- Participation in Junior League of Athens Healthy Family Day and Clarke Middle Activity Day
- Partnership with ACC Leisure Teens in Action program
- Equipment donation to the Autistic Sensory Development Room at Barnett Shoals Elementary
